10th of January, 2025: “First exploratory vulnerability assessment of data-poor deep-sea sharks in the Azores”.

Nicolás Collazo Jiménez (Universidade dos Açores, Marine Beacon)

Abstract

This talk will present an assessment of the vulnerability of Deania profundorum and Deania calcea to demersal longline fisheries in the Azores Archipelago, where these deep-sea sharks remain bycatch despite the EU catch prohibition. Using the EASI-Fish methodology, we estimated fishing mortality (F) based on the overlap of each fishery with the species’ distribution and incorporated these estimates into length-structured per-recruit models to evaluate population vulnerability against biological reference points. Preliminary results suggest that both species are “less vulnerable.” However, data limitations and methodological assumptions necessitate cautious interpretation. Future research should prioritize refining growth and biological parameters to enhance the robustness of these assessments and support conservation efforts.
