11th of October, 2024: “Toward Fully Automated Intelligent Fishing: can we achieve precision fishing and eliminate bycatch in trawl fisheries?”.

Robin Faillettaz (IFREMER)

Abstract.

Trawl fisheries have significant effects on the marine habitats, with some triggering exceptionally high levels of bycatch (> 75%). Yet, they represent a major proportion of landings worldwide. We here aim to determine whether the impacts of trawls can be minimized by developing precision fishing methods for these fishing methods. Within Marine Beacon, we will first focus on the automatic quantification of PET species bycatch through embedded imaging and artificial intelligence models for in situ species detection. This monitoring suite of hardware and software will then be coupled with an active bycatch reduction device to automatically select determined species along with a forced, automatic release of PET species. This presentation will provide an overview of the specific objectives, current progress and the main challenges to overcome, that could make trawls great again.
